How melt value is calculated
Melt value is the worth of the pure metal inside an item at today's spot price. Every calculator on this site uses the same formula:
melt value = weight in troy ounces × purity × spot price
A 14k gold chain weighing 10 grams, for example, is 10 ÷ 31.1035 = 0.3215 troy ounces, and 14k is 58.5% gold, so it holds 0.1881 troy ounces of pure gold. Multiply that by the gold spot price and you have its melt value.
Melt value is not the same as an offer
Refiners charge to melt and assay metal, and every buyer has costs, so offers for scrap usually come in below melt value. How far below varies a lot between buyers. The full calculator shows what percent of melt an offer is, so you can compare buyers on equal terms. Our selling guide covers what to ask before you sell.
Coins can be worth more than melt. Rare dates, mint marks and coins in high grade sell to collectors for well above their metal content, so check before selling anything old as scrap.
