How platinum melt value is calculated

melt value = grams ÷ 31.1035 × platinum purity × platinum spot price

A 6-gram PT950 wedding band, for example, is 6 ÷ 31.1035 = 0.1929 troy ounces, and 95% of that is 0.1833 troy ounces of pure platinum. Multiply by the platinum spot price for its melt value.

Platinum bullion coins and bars are listed with the other coin melt values.

Common questions

What purity is platinum jewelry?

Most platinum jewelry is 95% platinum and is stamped 950, PT950, Pt950 or PLAT. Some pieces are 900 (PT900) or 850 (PT850), especially from Japan. Choose the matching purity above.

Is white gold the same as platinum?

No. White gold is a gold alloy, usually plated with rhodium to look bright white. It is stamped with a karat such as 14K or 585. Use the gold calculator for white gold.

What does PD950 mean?

PD or PALL marks mean palladium, a different metal from platinum with its own price. This calculator covers gold, silver and platinum only.

Why is a platinum ring heavier than a gold ring of the same size?

Platinum is denser than gold alloys, so the same ring weighs more in platinum. That is one reason platinum jewelry often has a meaningful melt value even when it looks small.
