Troy ounces vs. regular ounces

Gold, silver and platinum are priced in troy ounces. A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, about 10% heavier than the 28.3495-gram ounce used for food and mail. A troy pound, though, has only 12 troy ounces, so it is lighter than a regular pound.

Pennyweight

A pennyweight (dwt) is 1.5552 grams, and 20 pennyweight make a troy ounce. Jewelers and gold buyers in the United States often quote scrap gold prices per pennyweight. Once you know the weight, the gold melt calculator shows what it is worth.
